PS5 Nears Xbox 360 Record ๐Ÿš€

PlayStation 5 Sales Surpass 80 Million Units Despite Fewer Exclusives

The PlayStation 5 has reached a major milestone, surpassing 80 million units sold as of June 30, 2025. Despite concerns over a slower release schedule for first-party exclusives compared to its predecessor, the PS5 continues to perform strongly in the market. The console is now close to overtaking the Xbox 360, which sold 84 million units, and is on track to surpass the PlayStation 3โ€™s lifetime sales of around 87 million.

Sony confirmed the 80.3 million figure in its latest quarterly earnings report. The company sold 2.5 million PS5 units in the most recent quarter, a slight dip from the 2.8 million sold in the previous quarter. However, sales were still up by approximately 100,000 units compared to the same period last year.

Software sales also saw growth, with around 66 million PS4 and PS5 games sold in the quarter. Nearly 7 million of those were first-party titles, marking a 12 million increase in overall game sales compared to the previous year. Digital sales accounted for 83 percent of total game purchases, the highest share in any quarter of the last financial year.

Sonyโ€™s recent push into live-service games has faced setbacks, including the high-profile failure of one title and the cancellation of others. Despite these challenges, software sales remain strong, indicating that the companyโ€™s broader gaming strategy is still effective.

The PS5 will celebrate its fifth anniversary this November, raising questions about whether it can reach the 100 million sales mark. The PlayStation 4 achieved that milestone in five years and seven months, setting a record at the time. However, the PS5 faces additional hurdles, including recent price increases in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand due to economic pressures like inflation and currency fluctuations. Sony has hinted at the possibility of moving some manufacturing to the US to mitigate these challenges.

As the PS5 continues its strong sales performance, the gaming industry will be watching to see if it can maintain momentum and eventually join the elite group of consoles that have sold over 100 million units.
