Google Introduces Temporary Chats and Memory Features for Gemini
Google is rolling out a new temporary chat feature for Gemini, its AI chatbot, offering users a way to engage in one-off conversations without leaving a trace. Similar to a browser’s incognito mode, these chats won’t appear in your history, influence future interactions, or be used for AI training.
Temporary chats will be stored for up to 72 hours, giving users time to revisit them or provide feedback. The feature is currently being released and will be fully available in the coming weeks.
Alongside this privacy-focused addition, Google is introducing a memory setting that allows Gemini to learn from past conversations. When enabled, the AI can recall details like hobbies or preferences to personalize responses—such as suggesting party themes based on previous discussions.
This memory feature was first introduced for Gemini Advanced earlier this year, following similar options in ChatGPT and Claude. By default, the setting is turned on, so users who prefer privacy should adjust their settings manually. In the Gemini app, navigate to Settings, then Personal context, and toggle off Your past chats with Gemini.
Google is also renaming its data retention option from Gemini Apps Activity to Keep Activity. While the label has changed, existing preferences will remain unchanged.
The personalized conversation feature will debut with Gemini 2.5 Pro in select countries before expanding to Gemini 2.5 Flash and additional regions in the coming weeks. These updates aim to give users more control over their AI interactions, balancing convenience with privacy.
