Pixel 10 Unleashes On-Device AI Magic

Google Pixel 10 Unveils On-Device AI Revolution with Gemini Nano

Software has always been a core part of the Pixel identity, and the new Pixel 10 family is pushing that further with a suite of new on-device machine learning and AI features powered by Gemini Nano. These features will debut on the new phones before eventually making their way to older Pixel models.

The first tool users will likely encounter is Magic Cue. As you text friends, Gemini Nano works in the background to populate the conversation with contextual suggestions. For instance, if a friend asks about a dinner reservation, the phone may display a shortcut to send them the Google Maps listing directly. The feature relies on your existing digital history, like Gmail, and you can long-press any shortcut to see exactly where the AI sourced its information.

Magic Cue extends throughout the Android system. If a family member texts about an upcoming shared flight, the feature will not only provide the airline’s number but also display your flight information on screen for easy reference.

A new feature called the Daily Hub is arriving on the Discover page, which is accessed by swiping left on the home screen. Similar to Samsung’s Now Brief, it provides an AI-generated summary of your upcoming day. It displays a greeting, weather forecast, and calendar events at the top, followed by a list of reminders pulled from apps like Gmail and Keep. Further down, you will find recommended articles and YouTube videos.

For users looking to reflect, a new Journal app is also included. It uses AI to automatically suggest relevant photos from your library to include with your entries. The app also categorizes entries based on topics you choose, using emojis for an at-a-glance view of your month.

In Google Photos, a powerful new tool named Conversational Editing has been introduced. This allows you to edit images by simply describing the changes you want. For example, you can instruct Photos to remove all strangers from a busy tourist selfie. The on-device model processes the request and generates the edited image, with the original displayed alongside for comparison. You can layer multiple edits and undo any changes you do not like.

The camera app itself receives several AI upgrades. Camera Coach analyzes the scene you are about to photograph and offers suggestions on the best angle, lighting, and capture mode to use. Another feature, Auto Best Take, finds and blends the best parts of similar photos to ensure everyone in a group shot looks their best. The Add Me feature, which inserts the photographer into a photo, has also been improved to work with even larger groups.

Google is also enhancing its Gemini Live visual assistant. New visual indicators will mask parts of the screen to highlight what Gemini is referring to when answering questions. This will debut on the Pixel 10 before coming to other Android and iOS devices. Furthermore, an upcoming model update promises to dramatically improve how Gemini uses human speech elements. You will be able to ask it to speak slowly for note-taking, and it will adjust its tone based on the emotional context of the conversation.

The Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, and Pixel 10 Pro XL are available for pre-order now, with general availability starting August 28. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Pixel Watch 4, and Pixel Buds 2a will follow on October 9.
