Canon C50: Filmmaking Power, Social-Ready.

Canon Unveils The EOS C50 A Compact Powerhouse For The Next Generation Of Filmmakers

Canon has launched the EOS C50, its smallest and lightest cinema camera to date, designed to serve the needs of both professional filmmakers and social media content creators. This new camera packs a significant punch into a compact body, featuring a full-frame sensor and an RF lens mount, making it a versatile tool for a wide range of production scenarios.

Weighing just 1.5 pounds, the EOS C50 is built for mobility without sacrificing professional features. At its core is a new full-frame CMOS sensor that supports internal 7K 60p recording in 12-bit Cinema RAW Light, alongside 7K 30p in RAW HQ. For creators who prefer a more efficient workflow, it also offers high-bitrate XF-AVC and XF-HEVC codecs. A key feature for modern workflows is its 3:2 open gate recording, allowing filmmakers to shoot a large, square image that can be losslessly cropped into various aspect ratios for different platforms, a first for Canon’s cinema line.

Perhaps its most innovative capability is simultaneous crop recording. While capturing 4K footage, the C50 can simultaneously record a separate, cropped video file optimized for social media. This allows for the creation of vertical 9:17, 9:16, or 1:1 square videos at 2K resolution at the same time as the primary widescreen shot, a major boon for creators who need to promote their work on platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels without a separate shoot.

The camera is equipped with Canon’s renowned Dual Pixel autofocus system, enhanced with AI subject tracking that can detect and follow the eyes, face, head, and body of people or animals. For audio, it supports two full-size XLR inputs via an optional top handle, and it includes professional monitoring tools like waveform displays and focus peaking. It records to both SD-UHS II and CFexpress card slots. Notably, the camera does not include in-body image stabilization, relying on optical stabilization in lenses and electronic stabilization.

Beyond its video prowess, the C50 also functions as a capable hybrid camera for still photography, capturing 32-megapixel photos at burst rates of up to 40 frames per second.

Alongside the C50, Canon announced the RF 85mm F/1.4 L VCM, a new hybrid lens specifically designed for portrait shooting in both video and photos. The company also revealed an update to its popular compact camera, the PowerShot Elph 360 HS A, which now features a microSD card slot.

The Canon EOS C50 is scheduled to begin shipping in the fourth quarter of 2025 with a price tag of $3,899. The new RF 85mm F/1.4 L VCM lens will be available this month for $1,649, and the PowerShot Elph 360 HS A will arrive in October 2025 for $380.
