iOS 26 Drops Major Visual Overhaul

Apple confirms iOS 26 release date and compatible devices

The final version of iOS 26 will be available for download on Monday, September 15. This major software update was detailed following Apple’s iPhone 17 launch event and brings a significant visual overhaul alongside new functionality. The update will not be available for all older iPhone models, with three specific devices from 2018 now being cut off from support.

The iPhones that will not be eligible to upgrade to iOS 26 are the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max. This marks a change from last year when no models were removed from the compatibility list.

If your device is from 2019 or later, it will support the new OS. The full list of compatible iPhones includes the iPhone SE (second generation or later), iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max, iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max, iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 16e, iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

For iPad users, iPadOS 26 will also be released on September 15. Compatible tablets include the iPad Pro (M4), iPad Pro 12.9‑inch (3rd generation and later), iPad Pro 11‑inch (1st generation and later), iPad Air (3rd generation and later, including M2 and M3), iPad (8th generation and later, including A16), and iPad mini (5th generation and later, including A17 Pro).

While users can continue to operate older, unsupported iPhones, doing so means missing critical security updates, which could leave devices vulnerable. Some apps may also cease to function properly if they require the latest OS.

The iOS 26 update introduces several anticipated features. The most notable is the Liquid Glass design language, which refreshes the home screen with new app icon styles and a floating button aesthetic for a more cohesive look. The Phone app has been redesigned for easier navigation, and a new Hold Assist feature alerts you when a customer service agent returns to the line.

New communication tools include Live Translate for real-time translation during phone calls or text conversations and a Polls feature for group messages to streamline planning. The lock screen receives more customization options, including new clock designs and widgets. Users can also finally customize their alarm snooze duration, choosing any time between one and fifteen minutes.

The Camera app has been simplified for easier use and now includes a feature that alerts you if a lens is dirty. Screenshots gain new capabilities, allowing for reverse image searches and the ability to ask ChatGPT questions about the captured image directly from the edit screen.

A public beta of iOS 26 remains available for users who want to test the software before its official release, though installing beta software always carries some risk.
