This plan positions Nintendo to easily surpass its own official forecast of selling 15 million Switch 2 units within its first fiscal year, which ends on March 30, 2026. If sales meet internal expectations, the company could sell as many as 20 million consoles this fiscal year alone. Such a performance would also allow the Switch 2 to outsell the first-year sales of the original Nintendo Switch, which itself holds the record as the fastest-selling console of all time in the US. The original Switch sold an impressive 17.79 million units in its first 13 months on the market. The Switch 2 is on track to potentially exceed that milestone in a much shorter timeframe. The console began global sales on June 5, meaning it has only been available for about four and a half months, yet its sales trajectory is already remarkably strong. In the United States, sales data from market researcher Circana shows that the Switch 2 is significantly outperforming the original Switch during the same post-launch period. This is happening despite concerns about potential tariffs impacting the consumer electronics market. Nintendo’s recent earnings report provided further evidence of the console’s successful launch. The company announced it has already sold 8.67 million games specifically for the Switch 2. Additionally, the new console’s backward compatibility feature has given a substantial boost to sales of games designed for the original Switch, with 24.4 million of those titles also sold. The upcoming release of Pokémon Legends Z-A later this month is expected to provide another major surge in game sales. The 25 million unit production goal is not just about meeting immediate demand. It is also a strategic move to ensure that Nintendo has enough consoles in its inventory to continue strong sales into the next fiscal year, avoiding the stock shortages that often plague popular hardware launches. This level of preparation indicates that Nintendo is betting big on the long-term success of the Switch 2.
