Peloton Recalls Over 800,000 Bike+ Units Due to Breaking Seat Post Hazard Fitness technology company Peloton is issuing a major recall of its original Bike+ exercise bikes. The recall involves approximately 833,000 units in the United States following reports of the seat post breaking and detaching during use, creating a fall hazard. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall, noting that Peloton has received three specific reports of the seat post breaking. This malfunction led to two injuries from users falling off the bike. Due to the immediate safety risk, owners of the original Bike+ are being instructed to stop using the equipment immediately. Peloton is offering a free replacement seat post that customers can install themselves. Affected customers should contact Peloton directly to request the new part. To determine if a Bike+ is part of this recall, owners should check the serial number. Units with a serial number beginning with the letter T are included in the recall. This serial number can be found in a few locations on the bike, including inside the front fork, behind the front fork, or behind the flywheel. This recall impacts all original Bike+ models that were sold in the US. The bikes in question were manufactured by Peloton between the years 2019 and 2022, though they remained on sale until April of this year. The company has stated that it has not received any reports of this issue for the 44,800 units it sold in Canada. This is not the first time Peloton has faced a seat post problem. In May of 2023, the company had to recall 2.2 million of its standard Bike models for a similar issue. In that earlier recall, the safety commission was aware of 35 seat post breakages and 13 user injuries. The recall comes just a month after Peloton unveiled a refreshed lineup of its exercise machines. The new Cross Training versions introduced features like an AI-powered camera for form checking, but also came with increased prices for both the hardware and the subscription service. This safety issue with a previous model highlights the ongoing challenges for the company as it works to maintain its position in the competitive connected fitness market.
