LG’s AI-Powered Gaming Monitors Arrive

LG Unveils New UltraGear Evo Gaming Monitors with 5K and On-Device AI LG has introduced a new series of high-end gaming monitors ahead of the CES technology conference. The UltraGear evo lineup features multiple displays offering 5K resolution, with several models incorporating on-device AI upscaling technology. This built-in AI is designed to handle image enhancement tasks independently, reducing the processing load on a computer’s graphics card. The company suggests this technology could allow gamers to postpone expensive GPU upgrades, a potentially significant benefit as rising demand for AI hardware has been pushing graphics card prices higher. The initial launch includes three models, with more expected in the future. The flagship is a 39-inch OLED monitor, model 39GX950B. It uses AI not only for upscaling content to 5K but also for scene optimization and audio enhancement. LG claims these algorithms refine image and sound for a more immersive experience. This curved ultrawide display with a 21:9 aspect ratio can switch between a standard 5K resolution at 165Hz refresh rate and a faster WFHD resolution at 330Hz, supported by a very fast 0.03ms response time. Next is a 27-inch MiniLED monitor, the 27GM950B. This model focuses on improving picture quality by minimizing the halo effect or blooming common in backlit displays. It achieves this with 2,304 local dimming zones, promising to preserve detail in both bright and dark scenes. It also includes the same suite of AI features for upscaling, scene optimization, and sound. It offers the same switchable refresh rates of 165Hz at 5K and 330Hz at QHD, with a 1ms response time and a high peak brightness of 1,250 nits. The most imposing model is the 52G930B, a massive 52-inch large-format gaming display. This 5K monitor offers a 240Hz refresh rate and features a pronounced 1000R curvature designed to wrap around the user’s field of view, which could be advantageous for simulation games like flight simulators. LG has not yet announced pricing or specific availability dates for these new UltraGear evo monitors. Given the advanced specifications and technology, they are expected to command premium prices.
