Rivian Powers Grey’s Anatomy with a Custom Electric Ambulance While the broader electric vehicle transition in America faces political headwinds, Hollywood is quietly plugging in. Rivian has partnered with the long running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy to create a custom electric ambulance, showcasing a practical and sustainable shift for film and television production. This unique vehicle is a modified version of Rivian’s Commercial Van platform, reimagined as a vanbulance. The project served two key purposes: to eliminate harmful on set exhaust fumes that can affect cast and crew, and to integrate a green narrative into the show’s storyline. Rivian highlighted an additional production benefit, noting that the absence of traditional engine noise brought a welcome quiet to the set while cameras were rolling. The conversion involved significant modifications tailored for television production. To accommodate camera crews, the vehicle’s interior walls and roof panels were made removable, allowing for the wide range of angles needed to capture dramatic medical scenes. Rivian also redesigned the rear access, swapping the standard roll up door for double doors and adding a side entry to the cargo area. The vanbulance received custom lighting and an exterior wrap labeled Seattle Emergency Response Services, fitting the show’s setting. To ensure authenticity, the Rivian team consulted with real life first responders from the Huntington Beach and Los Angeles Fire Departments. Their input was crucial in designing a functional interior layout that accurately reflects how emergency medical professionals use their vehicles. The electric ambulance made its debut in a November 2025 episode of Grey’s Anatomy but was featured more prominently in a recent episode, prompting Rivian to share details of the project. This initiative demonstrates a tangible application of electric commercial vehicles beyond delivery fleets, directly addressing environmental and practical concerns in the entertainment industry. It signals that even fictional worlds are beginning to transition to electric, one silent, emission free emergency response at a time.
