Gemini Skills Supercharge Chrome AI

Google is adding a new productivity feature called Skills to its Gemini AI assistant within the Chrome browser. This update allows users to save and quickly reuse their most effective prompts, streamlining repetitive AI-powered tasks directly from the desktop browser. The feature is designed to make interacting with Gemini faster. Users can save a useful prompt directly from their chat history. To use it later, they simply type a forward slash or click a plus button within the Gemini sidebar and select the saved Skill. Google provides examples such as creating a prompt to calculate the protein content in an online recipe or another to compare specifications for products open across different browser tabs. These saved Skills sync across any desktop version of Chrome where the user is signed into their Google account, offering convenience and continuity. Initially, the rollout is limited to users with their browser language set to US English. This enhancement is part of Google’s broader push to integrate its Gemini AI deeply into its flagship browser. Earlier this year, Google introduced a dedicated Gemini sidebar in Chrome and added features like the lightweight Nano Banana image generator. The company has also been expanding geographic access, recently making Gemini in Chrome available to users in Canada, India, and New Zealand. The move underscores the intensifying competition in the AI space, with major tech companies racing to embed advanced AI tools into everyday software. While Google continues to focus on these AI integrations, it also occasionally delivers more conventional browser improvements, such as the recent addition of vertical tabs support. The introduction of Skills represents a step towards making AI assistance more personalized and efficient for routine online activities.
