Adobe Firefly Introduces AI-Powered Sound Effects and Video Enhancements
Adobe continues to push the boundaries of generative AI with its Firefly platform, rolling out a suite of new features aimed at video creators. The latest update focuses on improving AI-generated video content, including the ability to add custom sound effects, refine compositions, and integrate third-party models like Google’s Veo 3.
One of the standout additions is the new sound effect generation tool. Since most AI video models produce silent clips, Adobe now allows users to describe the sound they want and record a vocal approximation. The system analyzes the timing and intensity of the user’s recording to generate a matching sound effect. In a demo, an Adobe employee created a zipper sound by vocalizing zzzztttt, which the AI accurately reproduced. While the feature worked well for simple effects, more complex sounds like footsteps on concrete were less convincing. However, Adobe emphasizes this tool is designed for ideation rather than final production. A timeline editor helps users sync audio precisely with their video.
Beyond sound, Adobe has introduced Composition Reference, Keyframe Cropping, and Video Presets. Composition Reference lets users upload an image or video to guide AI generation, ensuring the output aligns with their vision. Video Presets offer stylistic choices, including anime, black-and-white, and vector art filters. Keyframe Cropping simplifies aspect ratio adjustments—users upload the first and last frames of a video, select a format, and Firefly generates content that fits seamlessly.
Adobe is also expanding its third-party model integrations. Google’s Veo 3, unveiled at I/O 2025, is now available in Firefly. Veo 3 stands out as one of the few AI models capable of generating video with sound. Adobe ensures all partner models, including Veo 3, adhere to strict data privacy policies, meaning user inputs aren’t used for training future iterations. Every generated asset is digitally signed to prevent copyright issues.
According to Zeke Koch, Adobe’s VP of product management for Firefly, the company plans to maintain its rapid update cycle. More third-party models will be added, provided they comply with Adobe’s privacy standards. These enhancements solidify Firefly’s position as a versatile tool for creators looking to leverage AI for video production.
