Apple Releases 2026 Software Public Betas With Major Updates
Apple has rolled out the first public betas for its 2026 software lineup, including iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, and tvOS 26. These updates bring significant changes, from a fresh design to new productivity features, giving users an early look at what’s coming this fall.
One of the biggest changes is the Liquid Glass redesign, Apple’s most extensive visual overhaul in years. The new look introduces shiny, translucent elements across the software, creating a more modern aesthetic. Another shift is the naming convention—Apple has moved from sequential version numbers to a year-based system, with 26 representing 2026, the year the software will be most prominent.
iOS 26 introduces several new features, including personalized backgrounds and polls in Messages. Live Translation makes communication easier across Messages, FaceTime, and Phone calls. Visual Intelligence now allows users to interact with on-screen content, while new screening tools help prioritize conversations. The Phone app also gets Hold Assist, which monitors hold music so users don’t have to.
iPadOS 26 is arguably the most impactful update, transforming the iPad into a more capable work device. It introduces desktop-style window management, a Menu Bar dropdown, and familiar Mac tools like Preview and Exposé. These changes address long-standing complaints about the iPad’s productivity limitations, particularly for iPad Pro users.
On the Mac side, macOS Tahoe 26 brings the Liquid Glass design alongside new features like the Phone app and Live Activities from iOS. Spotlight has also been upgraded, allowing users to take actions directly from the search tool.
For Apple Watch users, watchOS 26 introduces Workout Buddy, an AI-powered fitness coach. The feature analyzes workout history to provide real-time insights and motivational feedback through text-to-speech.
