Apple’s Siri Upgrade Delayed Until Next Spring, Promising Deeper App Integration
A more capable version of Siri, one that goes beyond basic tasks like setting timers or creating reminders, may still be nearly a year away. Reports indicate Apple plans to roll out a major Siri overhaul next spring, powered by a new feature called App Intents. This upgrade will enable Siri to perform more complex actions within apps, such as commenting on Instagram posts, adding items to a shopping cart, or editing and sending specific photos.
Apple had initially promised a smarter Siri earlier but faced delays, putting the company in catch-up mode. The tech giant is currently testing App Intents with its own apps as well as third-party platforms, including Amazon, Facebook, WhatsApp, Uber, and YouTube. However, apps dealing with sensitive data, like banking services, may face restrictions or be excluded entirely from the feature due to privacy concerns.
The first preview of this enhanced Siri came during Apple’s WWDC 2024 event, where Apple Intelligence took center stage. However, the company later announced a delay in March, stating that the rollout would take longer than expected. This postponement led to backlash, including a lawsuit over false advertising after Apple showcased Siri’s unreleased capabilities in a promotional ad featuring actor Bella Ramsey. The ad highlighted features that were not yet available to iPhone 16 users.
While Apple works to refine the technology, users will have to wait until next spring for a Siri that truly integrates with apps in meaningful ways. The delay underscores the challenges of delivering advanced AI-powered assistants, even for a company with Apple’s resources.
