Apple Shifts Focus From Vision Pro to Smart Glasses, Report Says Apple is reportedly moving team members away from developing new versions of the Vision Pro headset to accelerate work on smart glasses that would compete directly with Meta’s Ray-Bans. According to a new report, the company informed staff last week of the change in priorities. The development of a cheaper and lighter version of the Vision Pro has been put on the back burner. Instead, Apple is now focusing its efforts on two models of smart glasses. One model, internally referred to as the N50, is said to have no display of its own and would pair with an iPhone. The company is reportedly aiming to launch this model sometime next year. A second, more advanced model of smart glasses is also in development. This version would feature an augmented reality display, positioning it as a rival to the Meta Ray-Ban Display. Its original release target was 2028, but Apple is now looking to expedite its development for an earlier launch. Like Meta’s smart glasses, Apple’s devices are expected to rely heavily on voice commands and AI interactions. This aligns with previous reports of a major Siri update coming next year, which will be powered by large language models and designed for use on various devices, including glasses. The report states that Apple’s smart glasses will come in a variety of styles and will be powered by a new chip. They will include speakers for audio playback and cameras for capturing photos and videos. Health-tracking capabilities are also part of the plan for the device. This strategic shift suggests Apple is adjusting its long-term roadmap for augmented reality. The company’s ultimate goal has long been believed to be the release of AR glasses that could one day rival the smartphone. With this move, Apple appears to be responding to the current market, where Meta has already established a presence with its smart glasses. Despite the reallocation of resources, Apple has not completely abandoned the Vision Pro line. Recent regulatory filings referenced an updated Head Mounted Device from Apple, though it is unclear if this is the previously rumored cheaper and lighter model. The current Vision Pro starts at three thousand four hundred ninety nine dollars.
