Baldur’s Gate 3 Skips Switch 2

Baldur’s Gate 3 Will Not Launch on Nintendo Switch 2, Says Larian Fans hoping to play Baldur’s Gate 3 on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 will be disappointed. Larian Studios, the game’s developer, has confirmed the critically acclaimed RPG will not be coming to the platform, at least not by their hand. The news came from Larian’s CEO Swen Vicke during a Reddit question and answer session. When asked about a potential Switch 2 version, Vicke stated the team would have loved to bring the title to the console but clarified that it was not our decision to make. This cryptic comment strongly suggests the choice was made by an external party holding the rights. The most likely candidates are either Nintendo or Wizards of the Coast, which owns the Dungeons and Dragons intellectual property that Baldur’s Gate 3 is based within. Speculation has pointed towards Wizards of the Coast, with industry rumors previously suggesting a strained relationship between the publisher and Larian Studios. Adding to the context, Larian’s technical director Bert van Semmertier noted in the same session that the studio just released Divinity Original Sin 2 on the Switch 2. He expressed the studio’s affection for the platform, confirming they will certainly consider Switch 2 for the next Divinity game. This indicates the absence of Baldur’s Gate 3 is not due to any general reluctance by Larian to work with Nintendo’s new hardware. The door is not completely closed for a Switch 2 port in the future. Wizards of the Coast could theoretically commission another development studio to handle the porting work. However, there has been no official signal or announcement of such plans. As for why Larian Studios itself will not be involved, the developer made its position clear last year. The studio announced it would not create any major content updates or expansions for Baldur’s Gate 3, and would also not be developing a sequel. The team is moving on to new, original projects, leaving the future of the Baldur’s Gate franchise in the hands of Wizards of the Coast. For now, players looking to experience Baldur’s Gate 3 on a Nintendo system are out of luck. The game remains available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, but its journey will not include the Switch 2 at launch.
