Claude’s Learning Mode Levels Up Skills

Anthropic Expands Claude’s Learning Mode to All Users and Developers

This spring, Anthropic introduced a new feature called learning mode for its AI chatbot Claude. Initially exclusive to Claude for Education users, the tool is now available to everyone, following a similar move by OpenAI with its Study Mode.

Learning mode changes how Claude interacts with users. Instead of providing direct answers, the chatbot guides users toward solving problems on their own, using a Socratic approach. Unlike the relentless questioning of the ancient philosopher, Claude allows users to disable learning mode at any time. The feature is accessible via the style dropdown menu on Claude.ai.

Anthropic has also integrated learning mode into Claude Code, offering two variations. The first, called Explanatory mode, provides summaries of Claude’s decision-making process, helping users understand its reasoning. The second, simply called Learning mode, is designed for beginners. It pauses code generation and inserts TODO comments, prompting users to write short sections of code themselves.

To try these features, users can update to the latest version of Claude Code and type /output-styles to switch between modes. Drew Bent, Anthropic’s education lead, described the update as an effort to make Claude more collaborative. He noted that the original learning mode was inspired by feedback from university students who expressed concerns about over-reliance on AI, a phenomenon they referred to as brain rot.

Bent explained that learning mode aims to balance the needs of novice and experienced coders. For beginners, it offers structured guidance, while seasoned developers can use it to refine their understanding of complex codebases. The goal is to help users develop skills beyond just completing tasks, fostering a deeper comprehension of programming concepts.

Looking ahead, Anthropic plans to expand learning mode’s capabilities. The company is opening up Claude Code’s Output Styles to developers, allowing them to create custom learning modes. Users can also tailor Claude’s responses by crafting personalized prompts.

Bent emphasized that Anthropic is still exploring new ways to enhance learning tools. The broader vision is to help coders at all levels grow into better problem-solvers, whether they’re writing code or managing engineering projects. With these updates, Claude continues to evolve as both an educational and collaborative AI assistant.
