Disney+ Upgrades Picture with HDR10+

Disney Plus Expands into HDR10 Plus Content Starting with Hulu Shows Disney Plus is making its first move into HDR10 Plus content, though availability will be limited initially. The rollout will begin with approximately one thousand shows from Hulu being available in this high dynamic range video standard. Support for other Disney owned programming, including its original series and movies, is planned for an unspecified later date. The announcement was made by Samsung, a key backer of the HDR10 Plus standard. At launch, the HDR10 Plus content on Disney Plus will be accessible on Samsung Crystal UHD TVs and higher end models from 2018 and newer. The support will also extend to a selection of Samsung Smart Monitors. HDR10 Plus is an enhancement of the base HDR10 technology for image quality. It serves as a direct alternative to Dolby Vision. Both of these competing technologies work by dynamically adjusting the picture on a scene by scene basis. This process provides a wider range of contrast, brighter highlights, and a more vibrant and accurate color palette, but only on displays that are compatible with the format. This move by Disney Plus follows a similar announcement from Netflix, which added HDR10 Plus support in March of this year. However, a number of other streaming platforms and device manufacturers have supported the HDR10 Plus standard for a longer period of time. The expansion of HDR10 Plus on major streaming services like Disney Plus and Netflix gives the format more weight in its competition with the more widely adopted Dolby Vision. For viewers with compatible Samsung televisions, this means a potential upgrade in visual quality for a significant portion of the Hulu library available through the Disney Plus app.
