Voice Actor Sues Over AI-Altered Performance

A French voice actor has taken legal action against game publisher Aspyr, alleging that a recent patch for the Tomb Raider IV-VI Remastered collection used artificial intelligence to alter her performance without consent. Françoise Cadol, the voice of Lara Croft in the French localizations of the games, sent a formal notice to the company.

The dispute centers around an August 2025 patch for the remastered collection. According to the official patch notes, the update for Tomb Raider VI included audio adjustments. The notes stated that the patch fixed issues where some voice-overs were too quiet, particularly in the Brazilian Portuguese localization, and restored some missing voice-overs on the Steam build.

However, fans reportedly alerted Cadol that the French dialogue in the updated game sounded different from her original recordings. They suspected that artificial intelligence had been used to modify her vocal performance. In response, Cadol has filed a legal notice asking Aspyr to pause sales of the game collection until the matter is resolved.

This case highlights the growing tension between performers and the gaming industry over the use of AI technology. Voice actors and on-screen performers have been actively seeking protections against the unapproved use of their likenesses and voices through AI replication.

Last summer, the SAG-AFTRA union launched a strike against several video game companies, with a central goal of securing stronger safeguards for performers as AI becomes more prevalent. Negotiations between the union and game studios frequently grappled with the complex issues surrounding AI in voice work. That strike was suspended in June 2025.

The situation involving Françoise Cadol and Aspyr is a developing story and serves as a prominent example of the legal and ethical challenges emerging from the integration of AI tools in creative industries.
