Kojimas Anime Death Stranding Arrives

Hideo Kojima Announces Death Stranding Anime Series for Disney Plus Hideo Kojima has revealed a new original anime series based on his Death Stranding franchise. The series, currently using the working title Death Stranding Isolations, is scheduled to premiere on Disney Plus in 2027. The gaming legend made the announcement at a Disney Plus event in Hong Kong alongside the series director, Sano Takayuki. This project marks the first time Kojima Productions has partnered with a global streaming platform, with Kojima himself serving as an executive producer. The anime will not be a direct adaptation of the existing games. Instead, it will tell a completely new story set within the Death Stranding universe. So far, details are sparse, but it has been confirmed that the plot will follow a young man and a young woman as they embark on an adventure. The series will be created using traditional hand-drawn 2D animation. Concept art for the project was displayed at the event and was created by Ilya Kuvshinov, the character designer known for Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045. The original Death Stranding video game launched in 2019 and featured a star-studded cast including Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelsen, and Léa Seydoux. The franchise expanded earlier this year with the announcement of a sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. This is not the only screen adaptation of Death Stranding in the works. Back in 2023, Kojima revealed that production company A24 is collaborating with his studio on a live-action Death Stranding film. That movie will be directed by Michael Sarnoski, the filmmaker behind A Quiet Place: Day One. Kojima stated at the time that his goal for the film was to create a new dimension of cinematic adaptation that goes beyond a simple translation of the game. While live-action series and movies based on video games have become increasingly common, the number of animated productions is also on the rise. Many of these, such as series for Splinter Cell, Arcane, Castlevania, and Tomb Raider, have found a home on Netflix. The Death Stranding anime appears to be a significant move for Disney Plus, positioning it as the platform’s first major original animated series based on a gaming intellectual property. This announcement signals a continued and growing interest from major streaming services in adapting popular video game worlds for television audiences.
