Meta Cracks Down on Content Thieves

Meta Cracks Down on Facebook Creators Stealing Content

Meta is taking action against creators who repost others’ content without permission as part of its effort to improve Facebook’s feed. In a recent update, the company announced new penalties for accounts that reuse text, photos, or videos from other users.

Accounts caught repeatedly sharing unoriginal content will face temporary demonetization, and all their posts—not just the copied ones—will see reduced reach. Meta clarified that the policy targets blatant reposting without meaningful changes, not reaction videos or transformative content.

This move follows similar efforts on Instagram, where Meta has prioritized original Reels over reposted clips. The company is now exploring ways to direct users to the original video when duplicates are detected on Facebook.

The crackdown is part of Meta’s broader push to reduce spam and low-quality content. Earlier this year, the company penalized over 500,000 accounts for engagement manipulation and spammy captions, restricting their reach and monetization. Meta also removed more than 10 million profiles impersonating popular creators.

To help creators stay compliant, Meta is introducing new in-app insights. A dashboard will flag issues like unoriginal content or spammy captions, along with monetization problems, giving users a clearer understanding of why their reach or earnings might be affected.
