Proton Mail Unveils Major Mobile App Redesign for Speed and Privacy If you use Proton Mail on your Android or iOS device, a significant update is now arriving. The privacy-focused company has launched completely rebuilt mobile applications, promising a cleaner, faster, and more private user experience. This overhaul, first announced back in April, represents a substantial step forward for the mobile client. A key claim from Proton is a dramatic performance boost. The company states that the new Proton Mail app allows users to scroll through their inbox, archive messages, and reply to emails twice as fast as previous versions. This focus on speed is coupled with the introduction of a fully functional offline mode. Users can now read, write, and organize their messages without an internet connection, with changes syncing once they are back online. The user interface has also been redesigned for simpler navigation. Proton mentions that common actions, like the button to compose a new email, have been repositioned to be within easier reach, improving one-handed usability. From a development perspective, a major change is the shift to a shared codebase for the iOS and Android apps. While the applications remain native to their respective platforms, they now share eighty percent of their code. Proton believes this approach will lead to faster development cycles and allow for near-simultaneous updates on both platforms in the future. Anant Vijay Singh, the product lead at Proton, linked the successful update directly to the company’s community-driven and privacy-centric business model. He stated that the new apps show what is possible when an email service is not built with the constraint of monetizing user data, resulting in a cleaner, faster, and more private experience. This mail update is part of a broader wave of development at Proton. The company is also working on a similar user experience overhaul for its Proton Calendar application. Furthermore, Proton recently entered the competitive AI space with the launch of its Lumo chatbot, which it positions as a more ethical and privacy-focused alternative to existing AI assistants. The redesigned Proton Mail mobile apps are beginning their rollout today and should be available for download in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
