Roblox Introduces Age Estimation Feature for Teen Users
Roblox is the latest online platform to implement tools aimed at better identifying the ages of its younger users. The company is launching a new age estimation feature for teens aged 13 and older, requiring a video selfie to access less restricted chat functions.
With this update, teens will need to complete an age check to use the new trusted connections feature, which allows unfiltered chats with friends. The verification process is handled by third-party identity firm Persona. If the video selfie fails, users can submit an ID instead. Once verified, teens can participate in group text and voice chats without content filters.
The move comes as Roblox faces ongoing criticism for inadequate moderation of its chat features, making it easier for adults to interact with minors. The company emphasizes that trusted connections are meant only for people teens already know, with parents able to monitor these interactions through parental controls. Teens can only add trusted connections via their contacts list or QR codes.
Roblox states that unfiltered chat should be limited to users who verify their age, framing the update as part of its commitment to creating safer digital spaces. While the company avoids calling it age verification, the feature aligns with growing regulatory pressure on platforms to confirm user ages.
Other platforms, including Reddit and Bluesky, have introduced similar measures, particularly in the UK, where new online safety laws will soon require age checks. In the US, states like Arkansas and Utah have attempted to enforce age verification for social media, though courts have blocked some laws. Utah has also passed legislation requiring app stores to verify user ages, an approach supported by Meta and Snap.
Unlike most platforms, Roblox permits accounts for children under 13, putting it in a unique position. For now, the age check remains optional, but having the system in place could help the company adapt if stricter regulations emerge.
