Samsung Boosts Galaxy Z Fold 7 Durability With 500,000 Fold Rating
Samsung has made significant strides in improving the durability of its latest foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Z Fold 7. The company claims the new foldable OLED display can withstand over twice as many folds as previous models, addressing one of the biggest concerns for foldable phone users.
According to Samsung, the display remained fully functional after being folded 500,000 times during a durability test conducted by certification company Bureau Veritas. The test, which lasted 13 days, simulated real-world usage. If a user folds their phone around 100 times daily, the display could last more than 10 years. Samsung stated that durability is no longer a limiting factor for foldable smartphones, signaling a major leap in reliability.
To achieve this improvement, Samsung drew inspiration from bulletproof glass to create a shock-resistant design. The company increased the thickness of the outermost glass layer by 50 percent and applied a high-elastic adhesive between each layer of the panel to better absorb impacts. The display also distributes shock more evenly across its surface. Additionally, Samsung reinforced the structure with titanium plates, enhancing overall strength while maintaining a slim profile.
Previous Galaxy Z Fold models, from the first to the sixth generation, were rated for only 200,000 folds. However, real-world tests have shown mixed results. For example, CNET’s durability test on the original Galaxy Z Fold found that it failed after 119,380 folds, falling short of the 200,000-fold claim. If the Galaxy Z Fold 7 can come close to its 500,000-fold rating, most users won’t have to worry about screen failure before upgrading to a new device.
The advancements in display technology and structural design mark a turning point for foldable smartphones, making them more viable for long-term use. With improved durability and a sleeker design, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 could help push foldable devices further into the mainstream market.
