Sony Secures Snoopy’s Future Charlie Brown’s New Corporate Home Sony’s $460M Peanuts Power Play Snoopy Joins the Sony Universe

Sony Takes Control of Peanuts in Major Franchise Acquisition Sony Music Entertainment Japan and Sony Pictures Entertainment have completed their acquisition of a controlling stake in the Peanuts franchise. The deal, valued at 460 million dollars, gives the Sony subsidiaries an 80 percent ownership stake. This move consolidates the beloved comic strip characters, including Charlie Brown and Snoopy, under the Sony corporate umbrella. Sony Music Japan initially purchased a 39 percent stake in 2018. The newly closed transaction involves buying an additional 41 percent from the Canadian media company WildBrain. With all regulatory approvals secured, Peanuts Worldwide is now officially a consolidated subsidiary of Sony. The companies first announced their agreement in December 2025, pending these final clearances. The Peanuts universe, created by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz in 1950, is one of the most recognizable and enduring properties in global pop culture. Its characters and phrases, like Charlie Brown’s famous exclamation of Good grief, are deeply ingrained. The franchise has expanded far beyond its comic strip roots into numerous animated television specials, feature films, stage musicals, and a vast array of merchandise. Iconic annual specials such as A Charlie Brown Christmas have become holiday traditions for generations. The property also includes theatrical releases like The Peanuts Movie and stage adaptations including Snoopy The Musical. This acquisition positions Sony to further develop and exploit the Peanuts brand across its extensive global entertainment networks. Sony Pictures can leverage the characters for new film and television projects, while Sony Music can explore soundtracks and music-based initiatives. The deal underscores the significant value of classic, family-oriented intellectual property in the current media landscape. The transaction leaves WildBrain with a remaining 20 percent minority stake in the franchise. WildBrain will continue to manage certain Peanuts operations, including its dedicated YouTube channel and the production of new content for Apple TV Plus.
