Sophie Turner Cast as Lara Croft in Upcoming Amazon Tomb Raider Series
After more than two years since its initial announcement, the lead role for Prime Video’s upcoming Tomb Raider series has been filled. Sophie Turner, best known for her role as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, has been officially cast as the iconic adventurer, Lara Croft.
Turner acknowledged the legacy of the character, stating she has massive shoes to fill from previous actors who have portrayed Lara Croft, specifically naming Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander. She also expressed excitement for audiences to see what the team has cooking.
The production schedule is now set, with filming scheduled to begin on January 19th. While a specific release date for the series remains unknown, this start date confirms the project is moving forward into active production.
Further details about the show’s creative team have also been revealed. Chad Hodge, known for his work on the series Good Behavior, will join Phoebe Waller-Bridge as a co-showrunner. Waller-Bridge was announced as the series creator and writer over a year ago.
Waller-Bridge brings a unique blend of credentials to the project. While she is celebrated for creating the acclaimed romantic comedy Fleabag, she also has significant experience in the action genre. She created the spy thriller Killing Eve, co-wrote the James Bond film No Time to Die, and appeared in the most recent Indiana Jones film, a franchise that heavily inspired the Tomb Raider video games.
This television series is part of a larger Tomb Raider initiative at Amazon. The company is also set to publish the next major video game installment in the franchise, which is currently in development at Crystal Dynamics, the studio that has overseen the main game series since 2003.
