Spotify’s Ticket Sales Experiment

SeatGeek has formed a new partnership with Spotify to connect music fans with concert tickets directly from the streaming app. This integration will allow Spotify users to find and purchase tickets for artists they listen to, but with a significant initial limitation. The feature is currently restricted to events at venues where SeatGeek is the primary, or official, ticket seller, not for the secondary resale market where it is also a major player. For now, this includes only about 15 partner venues in the United States. Many of these are large professional sports stadiums, such as AT&T Stadium in Texas. This means the integration’s reach is narrow at launch, targeting fans of artists performing at those specific locations. This move represents Spotify’s continued strategy of partnering with existing ticketing platforms rather than selling tickets directly itself. The company had previously tested direct sales but now focuses on being a discovery hub. Spotify currently lists dozens of ticketing partners globally, including giants like Ticketmaster and AXS, allowing users to access various sales platforms from within the app. The service also lets users follow specific venues to get alerts about new events. The SeatGeek partnership is one of many new features Spotify has rolled out recently as it seeks to enhance its platform for its vast user base, which now exceeds 750 million monthly listeners. Other recent additions include a feature that lets users swipe on a song to learn more about its background and credits, and the introduction of a group messaging function for shared music discovery. At the same time, Spotify is grappling with the challenges of a rapidly expanding content library, including addressing the influx of AI-generated music, though critics argue the platform’s efforts in this area could be more robust. The new ticketing link with SeatGeek is part of Spotify’s broader effort to become a more central part of the music fan’s journey, from listening to attending live events.
