Vimeo Returns to Apple TV

Vimeo Revives Apple TV App After Two-Year Hiatus

Vimeo, the video hosting platform known for its business and creator-focused services, is reintroducing its Apple TV app after discontinuing support for all TV apps in 2023. The move comes as a welcome change for users who found casting from mobile devices less convenient than a dedicated TV app.

The new Vimeo Apple TV app offers access to the platform’s curated Staff Picks, personal video libraries, and saved watchlists. It also includes enhanced playback features such as chapters, speed controls, and multi-language support. The app is now available for download, but requires an Apple TV running tvOS 18 or later and a free Vimeo account.

Vimeo shifted away from competing directly with YouTube back in 2017, well before it discontinued its TV apps. Since then, the company has focused on serving businesses and professional creators, offering tools for video hosting, sales, and even enabling users to build their own streaming services.

The return of the Apple TV app doesn’t signal a major strategy shift for Vimeo, but it does provide an easier way for users to revisit old uploads—like student films or creative projects—on the big screen. While Vimeo remains a niche platform compared to YouTube, the revived app could make it more appealing for casual viewing at home.
