Waymo’s Driverless Taxis Hit Miami Streets

Waymo Robotaxis Begin Passenger Service in Miami Waymo has officially launched its fully autonomous ride-hailing service for public passengers in Miami. This move follows an extensive testing period and marks another major city added to the company’s operational network, which already includes Phoenix, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area. The company announced that close to 10,000 Miami residents have already signed up for access to the service. Waymo plans to send invitations to new riders gradually over the coming weeks and months. Initially, the service will operate within a 60-square-mile zone covering neighborhoods such as the Design District and Wynwood. Waymo has also indicated that expansion to include trips to and from Miami International Airport is coming soon. Prior to this public launch, Waymo conducted several months of testing in Miami without passengers onboard. This phase allowed the company’s autonomous driving system to learn local road conditions, identify potential challenges, and adapt its algorithms to the city’s unique driving environment before introducing public riders. In its communications, Waymo emphasizes the safety and reliability of its autonomous vehicles. The company cites internal data claiming its vehicles have caused a ten-fold reduction in crash-related serious injuries compared to human drivers within its existing operational areas. Miami is just the first step in Waymo’s broader Florida expansion, with Orlando named as the next city to receive the service. Looking ahead to 2026, the company’s roadmap includes launching in several major Texas markets: San Antonio, Houston, and Dallas.
