Modern comic book cover illustration for Coinbase Q3 earnings. A bold black ink balance beam tilts at a steep angle across the frame, one end holding a large glowing gold orb and the other a large glowing crimson orb, each throwing out sharp radiating rays, with tiny golden dots streaming down like sand. The background is a deep teal field with a pale cream and green flat ground plain and stylised clouds. Bold thick black ink outlines, comic halftone dot shading, vivid cel-shaded colours, no text, no letters, no numbers, no logos and no watermarks.

Coinbase Q3 Earnings Show Profit Led by Crypto Accounting, Not Trading

Coinbase Q3 earnings, reported on October 29, 2026, produced a headline that looked like a decisive return to profitability. Net income reached 719 million dollars, up 66 percent from a year earlier, and diluted earnings per share were 2.51 dollars. Analysts had expected a loss of about 15 cents per share, according to Zacks. Yet the company did not report an operating surge. Revenue fell 35 percent year over year to 1.22 billion dollars, and almost the entire reported profit came from an unrealized gain on cryptocurrency Coinbase holds as an investment. The quarter was therefore both better than expected and less profitable than the headline implied.

Coinbase Q3 earnings: the accounting explains the headline

The reconciliation table is the most important document in the release. Coinbase began with net income of 718.7 million dollars. It then removed a 715.0 million dollar unrealized gain on crypto held for investment and a 39.2 million dollar gain on other investments before adding back 113.3 million dollars of tax effects. That produced adjusted net income of 77.7 million dollars, which the company rounded to 78 million dollars.

Put another way, the crypto mark supplied about 99.5 percent of headline net income. These gains were not fees earned from customers and they did not represent cash produced by trading. They were accounting changes tied to the market value of assets already on Coinbase’s balance sheet. The effect can also run in reverse. A 718.2 million dollar crypto loss contributed to a 666.7 million dollar net loss in the fourth quarter of 2025, while a 482.4 million dollar loss helped produce a 394.1 million dollar net loss in the first quarter of 2026.

ASU 2023-08 permits companies that hold crypto for investment to recognize unrealized gains in net income instead of applying impairment-only accounting. That treatment also helped drive Strategy’s third-quarter profit to 19.5 billion dollars through a bitcoin fair-value gain. Coinbase says its own holdings are primarily long-term and separate from its revenue-generating trading activity. Investors who rely on GAAP net income without reading the reconciliation may therefore mistake a crypto price movement for an improvement in the exchange.

Trading was stable, but the market contracted

Coinbase’s operating performance was steadier than the year-over-year revenue decline suggests. Transaction revenue was essentially flat at 590 million dollars from the preceding quarter even as total cryptocurrency trading volume across the market fell 10 percent. The company held its line by taking share. It reported 10.7 percent of global cryptocurrency trading volume, marking a fourth consecutive quarter of share gains across spot and derivatives. Derivatives volume expanded at a compound annual rate of 179 percent over the prior two years.

Within transaction revenue, consumer revenue held at 450 million dollars, institutional revenue declined 8 percent to 92 million dollars, and other transaction revenue increased 2 percent to 48 million dollars. The market backdrop explains some of the weakness in institutional activity. Total cryptocurrency market capitalization rose 37 percent from the end of June, but the improvement came late in the quarter and did not translate into a broad increase in trading. Coinbase gained customers and volume in a shrinking market rather than benefiting from an industry-wide rebound.

Assets held on Coinbase’s platform represented 12.5 percent of total cryptocurrency market capitalization. The company also maintained positive adjusted EBITDA for a fifteenth consecutive quarter, with the measure reaching 333 million dollars, up 60 percent from the prior quarter. That is a useful sign of operating discipline, but the year-over-year comparison was weaker. Adjusted EBITDA fell 58 percent from 801 million dollars, and operating income declined from 481 million dollars to 62 million dollars.

Stablecoins and services became the larger business

Subscription and services revenue increased 3 percent from the second quarter to 570 million dollars and supplied 49 percent of net revenue. Stablecoin revenue rose 5 percent to 307 million dollars. Average USDC held in Coinbase products reached a record 22 billion dollars, up 49 percent year over year and close to 30 percent of average USDC market capitalization. Coinbase has now reported record quarterly average USDC holdings for 14 consecutive quarters.

This matters because stablecoin economics are less directly dependent on the price of bitcoin and ether. They depend more on balances, usage, distribution and the spread between what Coinbase earns from the network and the costs of serving it. The average daily loan book balance also rose 74 percent year over year. The quarter therefore showed Coinbase making its revenue mix less dependent on episodic trading activity, even as the headline annual revenue comparison remained poor.

Tokenized stocks are another extension of that strategy. Coinbase reported more than 1 billion dollars in cumulative trading volume on its Base network since the products launched in August. The initial offerings covered securities linked to Apple, Nvidia, Meta and Alphabet, followed by products linked to Amazon, Microsoft and Tesla in September. Access is restricted to eligible investors outside the United States. Morpho subsequently opened USDC lending markets for five assets, allowing eligible holders to use the tokenized equities as collateral. These products extend Coinbase beyond crypto custody and trading, but their current scale remains small relative to the core platform.

Prediction markets supplied the clearest growth story

Prediction markets passed 200 million dollars in annualized revenue during the quarter. That figure expresses a quarterly run rate on an annual basis, not revenue already collected across a full year. Coinbase reported compound quarterly revenue growth of 82 percent since launch and said daily traders increased by more than 60 percent from the previous quarter.

Chief executive Brian Armstrong described prediction markets as one of the fastest-growing products in Coinbase’s history. He said cryptocurrency-linked contracts supported activity during quieter periods for major sports events. Chief financial officer Alesia Haas also described the product as a revenue source less closely tied to cryptocurrency price volatility. Early evidence suggests the contracts can generate activity beyond conventional crypto purchases, including additional spot trading. However, a fast-growing annualized figure from a recently launched product may not establish the durability of its economics. Fees, incentives, customer acquisition costs and regulatory conditions all require continued scrutiny.

Guidance points to controlled growth, not a breakout

Management guided fourth-quarter subscription and services revenue to between 550 million and 630 million dollars. The midpoint implies roughly 3 percent sequential growth. Coinbase also reported transaction revenue of about 165 million dollars through October 25. That figure covers only part of the quarter, so it cannot be compared directly with the full third-quarter total, but it offers a limited indication of early trading conditions.

Adjusted expense guidance for 2026 was reduced by another 100 million dollars at the midpoint, to a range of 4.15 billion dollars to 4.3 billion dollars. The company ended the quarter with 8.6 billion dollars in cash and cash equivalents and roughly 11 billion dollars in total available resources. It also had about 2 billion dollars of remaining share repurchase authorization. This balance sheet gives Coinbase room to invest in products, maintain buybacks and absorb volatility without depending on fresh capital.

The market reaction was muted. Shares closed at 160.59 dollars before the release, down 1.1 percent, and were little changed in after-hours trading. The stock remained more than 55 percent below its 52-week high of 361.40 dollars. Investors appeared to recognize both the quality issue in reported profit and the underlying resilience of the platform rather than treating the quarter as evidence of broad-based earnings acceleration.

What matters beyond the headline

The most useful reading of the quarter is that Coinbase gained market share in a contracting trading market, grew subscription and services revenue, expanded stablecoin balances and established prediction markets as a promising new product. It also demonstrated that crypto fair-value accounting can dominate GAAP earnings. The adjusted net income of 78 million dollars and adjusted EBITDA of 333 million dollars describe the underlying exchange more clearly than the 719 million dollar headline. Whether the mark holds through the fourth quarter will decide whether the next headline looks the same, and the Coinbase Q3 earnings adjusted figures are the ones that describe the exchange itself.

That does not make the quarter weak. It makes the composition of the result more complicated. Coinbase has built several businesses that can keep earning when spot activity slows, but transaction revenue remains the central engine and it did not grow on a full-quarter basis. The next results will test whether stablecoin economics, tokenized assets and prediction markets can deepen while the trading market remains subdued. Coinbase Q3 earnings ultimately reward close reading: the accounting created the spectacular profit figure, while the operating businesses showed resilience, not a boom.
