CUPERTINO, California — Apple has formally introduced iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, marking the company’s most significant hardware redesign since the original device shipped nearly two decades ago. The iPhone Duo foldable launch centers on a 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display that Apple describes as the thinnest iPhone ever produced when opened, paired with a 5.4-inch outer screen that delivers 90 percent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro when closed. Both panels share the same aspect ratio so content scales proportionally between open and closed states.
Pre-orders for iPhone Duo begin Friday, October 16, with general availability starting Friday, October 23. The device ships in two colors — star white and night sky — and runs iOS 27 on Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, paired with a custom vapor chamber and a dual-battery architecture. The enclosure uses grade 5 titanium for the frame and a mirror-polished finish, while a 3D-printed hinge cover carries a contrasting micro-blasted surface. Ceramic Shield protects the rear of the device, and Ceramic Shield 2 covers the front with what Apple rates as three times better scratch resistance than the previous generation.
The inner display stack includes a scratch-resistant coating, a nano-textured cover layer made from a custom polymer with up to 40 percent higher stiffness than materials commonly used in the industry, high-strength glass above and below the folding panel, custom adhesives that allow the layers to slide like pages of a book, and a titanium plate at the bottom for added durability. iPhone Duo carries an IP68 rating for splash, water, and dust resistance. Support ribs reinforce the internal structure, and antenna splits with ceramic fiber inserts enhance frame rigidity.

Both displays are Super Retina XDR panels with ProMotion, Always-On, and 3000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. The 7.6-inch inner screen is 50 percent larger than the panel on iPhone 18 Pro Max and features a nano-texture finish designed to reduce glare and minimize crease visibility. Apple has hidden a FaceTime camera beneath the inner display, which remains invisible when not in use. A circular, redesigned status bar nestles into the corner when the device is open, while the Dynamic Island has been reworked to fit vertically on the side of both displays and expand for Live Activities and alerts.
Touch ID returns, integrated into the side button, and iPhone Duo can also be unlocked via an Apple Watch. Camera Control is present on the frame and includes a new Siri Camera mode that allows Siri to see what the user sees and act on that visual context. Later this year, iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C, enabling note-taking, sketching, and document markup on either display. iOS 27 repositions Lock Screen controls, the Dock, and navigation elements to the sides so the inner display can dedicate more vertical space to content. When opened, the screen shows two Home Screen pages with a Today View column of widgets on the left.

The rear camera array includes a 48MP Fusion Main sensor capable of 48MP photos with zero shutter lag, a 24MP default mode for sharing, and an integrated optical-quality 2x Telephoto. A 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera, shared with iPhone 18 Pro, supports wider fields of view and macro photography. Upgraded Photographic Styles add new texture and grain controls.
The front-facing camera uses Center Stage, automatically capturing photos and videos in any orientation without rotating the device. The under-display FaceTime camera supports hands-free video calls when the phone is propped open. iPhone Duo supports 4K at 120 fps recording in Dolby Vision on the Fusion Main camera, post-capture Cinematic effects at up to 60 fps, an updated Audio Mix with voice isolation and music separation, and 4K Dolby Vision HDR time-lapse — all of which can be captured without a tripod by using the folded form factor as a stand.

Apple is positioning iPhone Duo as the first device engineered end-to-end around on-device and personal-context AI. Apple Intelligence and the upgraded Siri AI draw on a wider personal context to answer queries and take actions, including the new Siri Camera mode. Apple apps have been reworked for the foldable format, and third-party developers can adapt their applications using new and updated APIs in the latest SDKs, with upcoming iPhone Duo support inside Device Hub in Xcode. The company specifically named Netflix, Zoom, and Slack among apps optimized for the new hardware.
Battery life is rated for all-day use, supported by the A20 Pro’s thermal management system and dual-battery architecture.
