Nintendo Switch 2 Sales Surge Past 6 Million Units Amid Supply Shortages
Nintendo has sold over 6 million Switch 2 consoles in less than four weeks, putting the company on track to meet its ambitious target of 15 million units sold by April 2026. The latest earnings report reveals strong demand for the new console, with sales outpacing the original Switch, which took a full year to reach the same milestone.
Despite the impressive sales figures, Nintendo acknowledges that supply shortages are affecting availability in multiple regions. The company has pledged to ramp up production to meet the high demand. Sales data shows that 5.82 million units were sold by June 30, with an additional 200,000 units sold by July 25. While the July slowdown suggests inventory constraints, the overall momentum remains strong.
Software sales for the Switch 2 have also performed well, reaching 8.67 million units. The success is partly attributed to bundled offerings like Mario Kart World and popular titles such as Donkey Kong Bananza. Additionally, third-party games have contributed to the strong software performance, with Nintendo recently announcing several new releases from external developers.
Backward compatibility with original Switch games has also boosted software sales, with 24.4 million legacy titles sold during the same period. This feature has helped maintain engagement among existing Switch owners while attracting new buyers to the upgraded console.
Financially, Nintendo reported a stellar quarter, more than doubling its revenue year-over-year to 572.3 billion yen (3.8 billion USD) and posting a profit of 56.9 billion yen (378 million USD). The company remains confident in its full-year forecast, projecting 1.9 trillion yen (12.6 billion USD) in revenue.
With demand showing no signs of slowing, Nintendo faces the challenge of scaling production to keep up with consumer interest. If successful, the Switch 2 could cement its place as one of the fastest-selling consoles in recent history.
