ChatGPT Opens Its App Store

OpenAI Launches App Store Inside ChatGPT OpenAI has launched a new app directory directly within ChatGPT, transforming the chatbot into a platform for third-party applications. This move allows users to connect to external services and take actions like ordering groceries, creating presentations, or searching for apartments, all through a chat interface. Previously called connectors, these integrations are now simply referred to as apps. The directory is organized into categories like Feature, Lifestyle, and Productivity, featuring popular services such as Booking.com, Spotify, and Dropbox. To use an app, users click on it, authorize the connection, and can then begin a chat related to that service. Once connected, any app can be invoked during a conversation by using an @ mention. For example, connecting Dropbox enables users to analyze documents, prepare briefs, and summarize reports directly within ChatGPT. New apps introduced with the launch include an Apple Music integration for finding music and managing playlists, and a DoorDash app that can turn recipes and meal plans into a shopping cart. Alongside the consumer-facing directory, OpenAI is now opening submissions for developers. The company has published app submission guidelines and is encouraging developers to build and submit their apps for review and publication. To support this, OpenAI has released extensive resources including best practice guides, open-source example apps, a UI library for chat interfaces, and a step-by-step quickstart guide. This builds upon the software developer kit the company introduced last October. Regarding monetization, OpenAI stated that for now, developers can only generate revenue by linking out from the ChatGPT app to their native website or application. The company confirmed it is exploring future internal monetization options for developers. Privacy is also a stated priority, with requirements for companies to provide clear data usage policies. This app ecosystem represents a significant step in OpenAI’s broader vision to make ChatGPT a more versatile and actionable tool. It aligns with CEO Sam Altman’s promises to expand functionality through customizable AI agents. The company expressed a long-term goal where apps feel like a natural extension of conversation, helping users move from ideas to action while fostering a thriving developer ecosystem.
